Practical Legal Ethics:  A Perspective from the Bench

The beautiful setting of the Emerald Lakes Golf Club provided a picturesque background for the recent Women Lawyers Association of Queensland (WLAQ) event where members of the legal profession had an opportunity to listen to Her Honour, Judge Purdon-Sully speak on the topic of practical legal ethics.

Christine Smyth in her role as WLAQ Social Secretary opened the event by welcoming the attendees and introduced Her Honour as the guest speaker. Christine highlighted the importance of professional development and networking events outside of the Brisbane CPD to cater for the growing legal profession in those areas.

The event was a wonderful opportunity for all those in the legal profession, but especially for law students and/or those new to the profession whom had not yet had an opportunity, to speak directly and personally with a member of the judiciary. It was also an excellent networking opportunity and a chance to informally discuss ideas and relevant issues with others in the same field.

Her Honour has an extensive legal career and her presentation provided wisdom and insight based on her experience in private practise and at the bench. No doubt all those who attended will bear in mind Her Honour’s closing remarks of Kipling’s poem “If”, which reminds us:

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;…..”

Our Thanks to Emerald Lakes Golf Club for providing 2 lucky door prizes, Robbins Watson Solicitors donated a further prize. A big thank you to our Robbins Watson Team, especially our family lawyer Joelene Nel, for making the event such a success.
