President of the Queensland Law Society Christine Smyth comments on Gold Coast residents who have unpaid fines. Christine stated that “while the increase in police numbers had a positive effect on crime rates, it also meant more people were being fined. She said the rapidly growing population was also a contributor. Ms Smyth said smaller offences that attracted fines were often linked to poverty.”
